Fenty Beauty by Rihanna – review

The Fenty Beauty by Rihanna launch in September 2017 was probably the biggest launch the beauty world had seen in a very long time. The hype was unreal and EVERYONE was talking about it. So the day the line launched I had to drop into my local Sephora here in Australia (which was one of the first countries in the world to have the line available for purchase) and pick up a few bits and pieces.

The were so many displays of Fenty Beauty around Sephora, but I went straight to the stand and was so overwhelmed and excited by the fact that there was 40 SHADES of foundation!! I usually buy the lightest shade in every foundation I try and the shade is still too dark, yellow or pink. But with Fenty Beauty I have now found my perfect neutral shade that matches me perfectly (Shade 100). Fenty Beauty has really raised the bar for the rest of the makeup companies out there to have a wider range of shades in their foundations.

Fenty Beauty also launched with cream sticks in highlighters, concealers and contouring shades. Regular powder highlighters, brushes, a gloss, blotting powder and papers. The new galaxy collection for holidays has now launched too. There’s no signs of stopping for Fenty Beauty and I can’t wait to see what they bring out next.

Now for what I picked up on launch day and the week after when I just couldn’t resist picking up a couple more products to try out.

Because I was one of the first 100 people to buy Fenty Beauty at my local Sephora I was given this sick Fenty Beauty makeup bag! isn’t it cute?!?!

The products I purchased:

  • PRO FILT’R Instant Retouch Primer $32US $46AU
  • PRO FILT’R Soft Matte Longwear Foundation – Shade 100 $34US $50AU
  • MATCH STIX Shimmer Skinstick – Starstruck $25US $37AU
  • KILLAWAT Freestyle Highlighter Duo – Lighting Dust/ Fire Crystal $34US $50AU
  • INVISIMATTE Blotting Powder $32US $46AU

I feel as though all of the products are fairly priced for a high end makeup line and are pretty inline with MAC prices.

PRO FILT’R Instant Retouch Primer

The PRO FILT’R primer is like no other primer I own. It minimises the look of pores but isn’t over thick and actually feels really hydrating, which is great for my normal/dry skin. To me it smells kinda like Play Dough which doesn’t bother me at all and it creates such a flawless base for the rest of your makeup. The frosted glass bottle makes the product feel really luxe and I love that it has a good pump to get just the right amount of product out.

PRO FILT’R Soft Matte Longwear Foundation – Shade 100

The PRO FILT’R soft matte longwear foundation has the same packaging as the primer but in white and I honestly love this type of packaging. I got the shade 100, which matches me perfectly but I am not used to having the correct shade in a foundation so when I first apple it before bronzer, blush, etc. I feel like it is too light, but for once in my life my face matches my neck and the rest of my body! yay!

Here’s a swatch comparison for you to see it compared with some of the other foundations I own.

I’ve seen some people complain about the foundation oxidising or drying down a darker shade. I haven’t noticed this with mine but as it is such a light shade the change in the shade may be minimal, but if you are in store just walk around with a swatch of it on your skin for awhile so you can make sure you are getting your correct shade.

The name of this foundation perfectly describes this foundation as it is a soft matte finish that isn’t cakey and lasts all day long, easily. The super think formula has full on coverage and is easily buildable from a medium to full coverage. It dries down super fast because of how thin it is so I suggest to apply it in sections and with a damp Beauty Blender so you have more time to blend it into the skin. I found using a Beauty Blender to work best for me in getting a flawless application.

I feel like I do use quite a bit of product when applying this foundation so it may not last as long as my other foundations but it is definitely my favourite foundation at the moment!

MATCH STIX Shimmer Skinstick – Starstruck

Swatching this shade in store I fell in love! I am not usually a cream stick type of person but these really intrigued me and I love the magnetic packaging they have so if you have multiple shades they will stick together. Unfortunately, that is as far as my love goes for this product. I first used it applying it straight to the areas of my face I would usually highlight and because of the hard formula it disrupted my foundation and it was just a complete mess. I have tried applying it with my fingers, sponge and brush and while those ways don’t disrupt my base makeup the pigmentation is just not there at all. If you have this product and it works for you please let me know how you use it as I just can’t get this formula to work for me. It is far too hard to work with.

KILLAWAT Freestyle Highlighter Duo – Lighting Dust/ Fire Crystal

The KILLAWAT highlighters on the other hand are incredible. The duos have a subtle side and a more metallic side. They blend in so nicely into the skin and give a gorgeous glow. I usually just mixed both of these shades together. This is definitely one of my favourite products from the brand.

INVISIMATTE Blotting Powder

Lastly, the blotting powder. While I rarely get oily I really wanted to try out this product to see if I could use it to kinda set my makeup in certain places on the days I don’t want to set my entire face with a powder. It works so well! it never looks cakey and if I get a little shiny throughout the day this product gets rid of all traces of shin and doesn’t disrupt my makeup underneath. This is going to be my best friend in summer!

I hope you enjoyed my Fenty Beauty review and if you have tried any of these products please let me know your thoughts in the comment section.

  1. I love the packaging of the products, they are everywhere on social media. The shade range is indeed great. Nice and to the point review. Beautiful shots.
